About This Work

Acquired for Private Collection

This work is based on my favorite muse, but it is also a portrait of home. Our kitchen tile, my husband, and the shadow of our houseplant stretching across the wall from the streetlight outside all became part of the composition. It captures one of those quiet moments that feels ordinary until you realize it’s the kind you’ll remember years later.

There are a few layers tucked into the piece. The fruit plays with its double meaning in queer culture, while the banana quietly nods to queer art history. This was also one of the first works where I started experimenting with the striped marks that have since become such a recognizable part of my process. Looking back, I can see those visual ideas beginning to find their voice here.

For me, this work is about finding sweetness even when life feels heavy. Regret has a way of lingering, but so do the small moments of comfort, love, and familiarity. Sometimes those are enough to remind us that even on the hardest days, there is still something naturally sweet worth holding onto.
