About This Work

Acquired for Private Collection

The Rabbit Hole is a vibrant contemporary acrylic painting by Michael K. Davenport, blending bright colors, mid-century modern design influences, and playful symbolism. Featuring a bold orange rabbit graphic against a teal backdrop, the piece combines retro-inspired aesthetics with a deeper sense of mystery and personal meaning.

The rabbit serves as a symbol of someone, somewhere, or something. A memory, a connection, a place, or an experience that holds meaning beyond what we can see. The interpretation is intentionally left open, inviting viewers to find their own story within the artwork.

With its striking orange and teal color palette, graphic shapes, and contemporary style, The Rabbit Hole makes a colorful statement in mid-century modern, eclectic, and contemporary interiors.

I also write a companion piece to go with this work:

A fictional world–previosuly real–no longer exists. It could happen again,

but it needs two people.

Beyond a teal door with an orange rabbit. Climb the stairs. Venture

towards the roof. Climb the ladder. You see a world–the same world–from

a different plane. Only the two exist.

Down the rungs and the steps, that isn’t true. But viewed from above, it is.

A world where a cage is freedom. A welcome trap. Behind a simple door.

The deeper you dig, the further your mind travels–the harder it is to

escape. To climb down from the dream and claw your way out of the

mud. Your heart grows heavier the closer you get to the exit.

It comes with time–the weight of emotion shifts.

Is the other person still in that world? Do they know it still exists?

Or have they already escaped its grip?

Maybe they have and they shut the door, trapping you there alone.

Maybe the duration of the stay has ended and the code to the door has

changed. Now you’re isolated.

Or maybe you are both still there in some other timeline

In some other universe where it all worked out.

Where happiness and contentment coexist.

The wounds are gone.

Even the scars seem to fade.

I guess, in the end, it doesn’t really matter. It played out as it did.

It’ll all be okay.

Real or not, the rabbit hole exists somewhere.

At some time.

In some capacity.

It can never be undone.
