Another in my mom’s heels, trying to mirror her. I wanted to belong. I wanted to be good. I wanted to be loved. And somewhere in between all of that… I was simply myself. Growing up queer in a small town meant learning how to survive before I learned how to thrive. My house was shot at in high school. So was my best friend’s. We were both gay, but not out yet. We didn’t even have the language to name what was happening. Fear lived quietly in the background of our childhood. This artwork honors that younger version of me—the tender, confused, resilient kid who didn’t know he would one day live openly, love boldly, and build a life rooted in authenticity.
